Tutor / lesson times and durations may be subject to change in accordance with the development of this practice and or the individual student’s progress.
Lesson Structure
All private lessons are of 30 minutes duration and time tabled weekly at an agreed day and time. A student will advance at his / her own pace with the aid of both our offline weekly lesson and online tutorials. The lesson at all times will be monitored and directed by the appointed teacher. Both the practical element and the written theoretical element (music theory) of musicianship are compulsory at the school and a student must sit / do in class all grades in practical and theory and harmony. An original theory book must be used in class. Students are prepared for recitals after grade 3 and grade 6. Skipping of grades and recitals is not permitted. Homework must be completed as instructed by a teacher. A parent / guardian may be asked to sit in on part of a lesson if a student needs parental guidance on homework.
8 Week Introductory Course
All new incoming students are introduced to the music school via an eight week (8 lessons) introductory course. The starting date and timeslot for the course must be agreed in advance via text / email and paid for in full before the tuition will begin. Once the commencement date and time has been agreed the time slot will be held for the student for this period. A refund will not be credited / awarded for any missed lesson during this period.
Post 8 Week Introductory Course
Before completion of the 8 week course a student will be asked to give notice of his / her intention to continue or quit. If a student wishes to take a break on completion of the course then his / her slot will be vacated and given to the next student on our waiting list. Slot times will not be held without payment. A student is welcome to rejoin the school at a later stage in the future.
Lesson Payment
Lessons are charged by the term. The term must be paid for in full whether all lessons have been taken or not. Payment/s will be accepted by cheque or in cash. Payment will be taken on the 1st lesson of a new term. A receipt will be issued if the full tuition fee has been paid. Any credits due owing to a missed lesson/s which fall under our "missed lesson policy" will be sorted at the end of a term
Payment by Installments
Payment will be accepted in this case in two equal installments . In the case of a 15 week term the 2nd payment must be made on week 8 and of a 10 week term the 2nd payment must be made on week 6. A receipt will be given when payment has been received in full. The tuition fee must be paid in full before the end of a term in order for the student to be enrolled in the next term and any credits due considered.
Attendance Policy
A student is obliged to attend lessons regularly. Lessons are not scheduled on Bank Holidays. Allowance to reschedule a lesson/s on behalf of a student may be made if the reason for the absence falls under our "missed lesson policy." In all cases when a student will not be attending a lesson on a particular day/evening please make a courtesy phone call or text to the teacher / office. Where a student does not return at the commencement of a new term nor provide absolute confirmation of intention to return he / she will be deemed to have quit and the said time slot will be terminated immediately without notice to the student / parent concerned.
Late Lesson Policy
If a student is late for a lesson then he /she will receive only the balance of the half hour duration. If for unforseen circumstances a room schedule is running a few minutes late the student will still receive the full duration of his / her lesson.
Missed Lesson Policy
A time tabled lesson missed by a student for whatever reason is forfeited. Exemption to this rule will only be considered in the cases outlined below of Hospitalisation, Family Bereavement or Educational Leave
- A lesson or lessons missed by a Student due to illness will be rearranged at a suitable time to both the student and the teacher on the production of a hospital certificate to support the time of absence from the lesson or lessons. The certificate must outline the duration of hospitalisation for any credit to be considered. For any uncertified sickness please see note four.
- In the case of a family bereavement i.e parent / grand parent / sibling and the funeral coinciding with a scheduled lesson a student upon producing evidence of same will be given an option of either rearranging the missed lesson or being awarded a credit of one lesson to their next music term. This courtesy credit does not extend to any other family relations.
- Students seeking leave outside of the standard Play Piano scheduled holiday period for the purpose of education must apply for the leave at least 4 weeks in advance of the leave date required. Applications must be made to the office of Play Piano by emailing info@playpiano.ie The leave is subject to the following conditions to ensure that the students place with current day, and time is retained during this non-attendance period:
- The Educational leave must be for a minimum of three consecutive weeks and not exceed a six week period. Educational leave is solely for educational trips for example, Gaeltacht scholarship. Proof of your trip to the Gaeltacht will be sought by the office. Family holidays will not be included under this heading.
- Play Piano will offer compensation to the student for the missed lessons in the form of a one hour courtesy lesson. The lesson will be scheduled at a time suitable for both the student and the teacher.
- If the student does not wish to avail of the one hour compensation lesson they can take advantage of a retention fee which is at a rate of fifty percent of the normal lesson charge for each non attended scheduled music lesson.
- All other time tabled lessons missed by a student will be considered forfeited and will not be rescheduled for another time. Exceptions to the rule are outlined above - Hospitalisation, Family Bereavement or Educational Leave.
Re Arranged Lesson Policy

Cancelled Lesson Policy
If a lesson is cancelled due to your teacher being away from the school, your teacher will either make your lesson up at an agreed time or offer a credit / refund. If your lesson is cancelled due to an episode outside of our control i.e power outage etc, and we cannot offer your usual teacher then you will be given the opportunity to have it made up with an alternative teacher or a credit / refund.
Additional Lesson Policy
If you are missing lessons you may request an additional lesson which can be booked in via the office. An additional leson will only be considered in a situation where a student may miss his / her pre booked lesson on account of going on holidays or school trips etc and may have an exam / performance pending .A discount of 25% will be applied if booking in for an extra lesson. Please be advised that the day and time given for an additional lesson will depend on teacher and room availability.
Substitute Teaching
If for any period your current teacher cannot make a lesson/s then the school will cover this period with a substitute teacher who is known to the business and who also has the relevant experience. In this instance all lessons will continue as normal until the teacher returns. All students will be expected to attend lessons during the substitution period. If the school cannot provide a substitute teacher then the lesson/s will either be re arranged to another day or a credit / refund offered.
Child Protection Policy
In the interest of child safety any parent / guardian who changes his / her contact details must also notify the relevant tutor at the school. Children are expected to be collected on time after the lesson. A parent must notify a tutor at the beginning of a lesson if they will be late collecting a child. Children standing outside the school waiting to be collected after a lesson is not allowed and so must remain in the waiting room until a parent / guardian has arrived to collect them.
Retention Fee
A retention fee is a payment which must be paid in order to secure a particular timeslot for a student who will miss 3 or more consecutive weeks of any part of a given term or vacate a term early and where these lessons do not fall under our "missed lesson policy" Once this is paid the time slot will be held for the student in question and a return date to lessons agreed. For further details on this issue please see your tutor.
Downgraded Lesson Policy

In order to sit an exam and receive said result a student must have completed the probationary period, be validated by the school as having acquired a certain standard in both practical / theory requirements in order to perform well in the intended exam and have attended and paid for all lessons up until the said exam.
Audition Day
This is the day when a student intent on sitting a recital performance will be required to present his / her programme to the head of school. At this sitting if the student hasn't reached a standard of performance deemed by Play Piano to succeed in the exam he / she will be withdrawn from the process and deferred to the next sitting of this exam. The audition day wil be held approximately 2 weeks before the actual exam date. This rule will be discussed with the relevant student prior to commencing the recital programme. Where a student has been withdrawn a refund will not be given.
