Biography

Niall Tormey is a composer from Westmeath. He has had his compositions performed on two continents, ranging from pieces for solo piano to orchestra.

He studied music at Maynooth University, after being accepted into the BMUS degree there. Having studied solo piano performance and four-hand piano performance in his first two years, he went on to do a double major in composition under Dr.Ryan Molloy and Dr.Martin O’Leary in his final year.

He started teaching himself guitar at the age of 15, and soon after did the same with piano. He gets great joy out of trying to play as many instruments as possible, as he is currently learning cello and trumpet in his spare time.

He often enters his compositions into composition competitions, among recent awards, he was shortlisted for the ALS award and was a finalist for the John Kuzma award.

He was also recently awarded a bursary for a residency in the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.

Having a heavy interest in choral composition, he also co-founded the West Wicklow voices and he also conducted the choir, who have since gone on to become a well-established choir.

He has been teaching both Piano and guitar since 2009, and also teaches mandolin and ukulele

He also has an interest in writing from an early age. Having had several poems and short stories published. His first poem being published when he was 13 years old.
