Music Theory

Music theory is a language and a fundamental knowledge requirement for becoming your own musician. It encompasses three general areas, the rudiments (learning Notation, Key Signatures, Scales, Rhythmic Patterns Harmony etc…) the study of ancient music writings and thirdly (Musicology) the study of the general processes and principles in music.

About this Course

The study of music theory will equip you with the skills needed to read and write Western music notation and also most importantly assist you to understand and listen informedly to a music performance. At Play Piano music theory is taught in conjunction with the practical component. You will study to take in house theory exams specially designed for our school that sit along side our practical grade examinations or may be prepared to undertake external theory grade exams.

We also specialise in one to one and group based tuition that covers the complete Junior and Leaving Certificate Syllabus as well as offering grinds for entry into third level institutions.

  • All levels accepted from beginners to advanced.
Fees and Funding

At Play Piano the tuition year consists of 40 weeks duration and is divided into three terms. Please note that fees are charged by the term and not on a weekly basis. All fees must be cleared by the end of a term. See our school Terms and Fees section for more information.

How to Apply

A consultation will be conducted at the school or online for all new potential students prior to enrolment. At the consultation the enquiring student will be informed of operational procedures at Play Piano and presented with an enrolment form. When this is completed and returned the students name will then be added to the current waiting list and contacted when a suitable time slot arises.

New students are enrolled on an 8 week probationary course with a cost of 200.00 euro which must be paid for in full in advance. Upon successful completion of this period the student will be enrolled as a full member of Play Piano.
